Abstract

This paper discusses the expansion of logistics structures for the flow of grains and minerals over Quilombola territories in Maranhão. This state is depicted in government and business discourse as a potential site for consolidating an important “logistics corridor” because of its location; scenarios involving job creation and development are projected and strongly represent proposals for enterprises as generating “public” benefits. Advantageous socio-spatial characteristics and the social importance of these enterprises are used as devices of coloniality in boosting their value and shifting demands from Quilombola communities to smaller places. Discussions were held based on meetings and live broadcasts involving conflicts related to the widening of the BR-135 highway, document analysis and conversations with Quilombolas in Itapecuru Mirim, Maranhão.
