New Call for Papers from ESA Journal: Thematic Section "Placing Agrarian Reform Back into Public Debate and the New Contours of the Agrarian Question"
This Thematic Section will be published in the first volume of 2027 of the journal Estudos Sociedade e Agricultura (ESA), affiliated with the Post-Graduate Program in Social Sciences in Development, Agriculture, and Society (CPDA) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). It will be organized by a committee comprising professors Leonilde Servolo de Medeiros (UFRRJ), Ramonildes Alves Gomes (UFCG), Ricardo Braga Brito (UFRRJ), and Sérgio Sauer (UnB).
Articles must be submitted by October 12, 2026, exclusively through the *Estudos Sociedade e Agricultura* submission system (revistaesa.com).
The articles comprising this Thematic Section are expected to provide analyses emphasizing the theoretical, political, and practical dimensions that allow for an understanding of the new contours of the agrarian question in the 21st century, as well as the challenges and modalities of implementing agrarian reform within this new context. Discussions should prioritize debates raised during the events of the Second International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD+20)—held in February 2026 in Cartagena, Colombia—including those that took place during the Forum of Peoples and Social Movements (organized by La Via Campesina), the International Academic Conference for Land, Life & Society (at the University of Cartagena), and the preparatory conferences held in Medellín, Cape Town, and Brasília. Accordingly, consideration will be given to articles addressing agrarian reform policy in Brazil and other countries, demands presented by rural social movements and other forms of association, and the contours of the agrarian question amidst the multiple crises currently being experienced.

The submission period runs from July 13 to October 12, 2026, and submissions must be made exclusively via the ESA journal system (revistaesa.com).
The final decision regarding the publication of the texts rests with the Thematic Section (ST) organizers and the Editorial Committee.
Manuscripts must comply with all submission conditions and author guidelines of the journal. Preference will be given to articles falling within the scope of Social Sciences and related fields, in accordance with the journal's defined scope.
The contribution must be original and unpublished.
The use of AI tools and resources is permitted for the preparation, writing, revision, and translation of submitted manuscripts. In case of AI use, it must be reported and mentioned, indicating the sources of the materials used, the tool used, the purpose, and the effective use, indicating this in a footnote and/or abstract and methodology.
Articles should have between 45,000 and 60,000 characters with spaces (including abstract, references and footnotes).
The article must include an abstract (1000 characters including spaces) and keywords (at least 3 words or 3 terms composed of a maximum of 3 words each) in Portuguese (or its original language) and in English (title, abstract, and keywords).

The analysis and evaluation of submitted articles will be conducted in three stages. First, the Editorial Committee will review the articles to ensure they adhere to the journal's guidelines. Next, the organizers will assess whether the articles align with the focus and expectations of the Thematic Section. Articles deemed suitable will then undergo a blind review by at least two ad hoc reviewers, who will provide assessments regarding the suitability for publication. Following this evaluation, authors may be asked to revise their work. All submitted articles will undergo the ESA journal's blind peer-review process.

This ensures the submission is distinguished from the journal's continuous submission flow or other Thematic Sections that may also have open calls. Articles submitted without this information may be processed under the continuous submission flow and miss the specific evaluation deadlines for this Thematic Section.
