In this article, we seek to remake the recent trajectory of studies on rural youth in Brazil from the analysis of works that are a reference in this field of research. We aim to discuss to what extent two founding postulates of this debate are still current: the first one, the opposition between the youth’s “individual project” and “family project”; the second, the countryside and city dichotomy, manifested in the binomial “stay or leave”. This exercise allows, on the one hand, to understand the genesis of studies on rural youth in Brazil and the transformations experienced over the last three decades in this field of research; on the other hand, it allows us to point out new paths for the study of this portion of Brazilian youth.
