Abstract

The working conditions of permanent rural wage earners is one of the least addressed issues in the analysis of agricultural social sciences in Argentina. Among these are the workers in cattle farming, a group that represents 20% of the country’s registered rural employees. Among the dimensions to be dealt with in the framework of the capital-labour relationship, the levels and forms of wages are one of its central axes. Thus, the aim of this article is to analyse the magnitudes and forms of remuneration and income received by livestock workers in the province of Buenos Aires, considering the agreements and conflicts linked to them. We will use official statistics and interviews to examine payments in money and goods as well as the ‘arrangements’ and ‘favours’ granted by the employer, in the hope of contributing to the visibility of these workers.
